    Standards and technical work

    IEEE Standard for Autonomous Robotics (AuR) Ontology.

    This standard extends IEEE Std 1872-2015 (IEEE Standard for Ontologies for Robotics and Automation), to represent additional domain-specific concepts, definitions, and axioms commonly used in Autonomous Robotics (AuR). This standard is general and can be used in many ways--for example, to specify the domain knowledge needed to unambiguously describe the design patterns of AuR systems; to represent AuR system architectures in a unified way; or as a guideline to build autonomous systems consisting of robots operating in various environments.

    IEEE Standard Ontologies for Robotics and Automation. Recipient of the IEEE-SA Emerging Technology Award.

    In 2016, the standard was mentioned by President Barack Obama during the White House Frontiers Conference, which highlighted five science and technology frontiers. One of them, the National Frontier, focuses on the role of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics in addressing complex national problems. The standard was included in The National AI Research and Development Strategic Plan (page 32), authored by the National Science and Technology Council from the Executive Office of the USA Presidency.
